The Monument's Men tells the true story of the men and women who saved millions of works of art during Hitler's reign of terror. In his most recent blog post, Ron Greenfield explores the history behind the movie and answers the question, "What is the importance of art?"
THE MONUMENTS MEN
Hitler’s intention was to create a museum, the Linz Museum, that would house the great works of art that had been stolen, beginning in 1935 and continuing as World War II was drawing to a close in 1945. They were middle-aged museum curators and artists who volunteered to save these priceless works of art.
The men and women of the Monuments, Fine Arts and Archives Program were the first to see the value and importance of saving these works...
On another level, The Monuments Men is a welcome break from the glut of effects-driven movies, car chases, explosions, or the doom of earth by alien forces. It goes into fresh territory, with a captivating story, both in its attention to detail and the scope of actual events. Like Robert Edsel, the author, one comes away with the feeling that Clooney’s passion and sincerity and the need to tell this story is the basis for making this movie. It is a film not to be missed. The country was still in mourning with the assassination of John F. Kennedy in Dallas on November 22, 1963. The era of Camelot had come to a close. America needed something that was different, rousing, and uplifting. Paul, John, George, and Ringo took the colonies by storm with their shaggy-hair and musicianship. They ushered in a new era, giving a voice to the upheaval taking place, the restlessness of a new generation looking to break loose and test the waters in new directions.
